And Why is it So Important?
When many people think about their local synagogue or Jewish community center, one of the first things that comes to mind is its membership. And there’s a good reason why; in order to create a local hub for community and tradition, membership is vital. Plus, the benefits are manifold.
As we create membership campaigns for synagogues and Jewish community centers, we are inspired each and every time by the generosity and sense of responsibility of our people. The desire to continue this sense of community from generation to generation, or L’dor v’dor, is not only a benefit of membership, but it’s also what drives this sense of responsibility.
Some of the numerous volunteer efforts put forth by the Jewish community centers and synagogues include anything from volunteering on Thanksgiving to rallying for human rights. These communities are coming together to do such good things in the world! Together, they demonstrate tikkun olam. By bringing people of all ages in close proximity, they can interact and experience Jewish life together. They can connect with individuals of different backgrounds, denominations and interests. And they can see that despite these differences, there are values and traditions they share.
So each time we think about our local synagogue or Jewish community center, let’s think about what being a member means. It’s not membership to a place, but rather membership to a community.
